Ambisonic microphones for VR180, VR and 360° video

Immersive video needs sound that turns with the viewer. An ambisonic microphone captures the full sphere around the camera, so when someone looks left in the headset, the sound moves with them.

On Apple Vision Pro

Oliver Kadel of 1.618 Digital has recorded VR180 productions for Apple Vision Pro, including Audi F1, on Reynolds microphones only: the A-Type 4 and A-Type 8, the Tarantula spaced array of eight O-type omnis, and the Reynolds Array: six C-type cardioids, four in a horizontal cross with one pointing up and one down.

Which mic?

  • A-Type 4: four-capsule, first-order ambisonics (ACN/SN3D). Light at 75 g, so it sits easily on a rig with a 360° camera.
  • A-Type 8: eight-capsule, hybrid second-order ambisonics for more precise localisation, horizontally and vertically.

From A-Format to your mix

Both mics come with the Atmoky/Reynolds A→B encoder plug-in, which converts the raw A-Format tracks to B-Format for VR, 360° video, Dolby Atmos or binaural mixes. It includes presets for the windshields and optional low-frequency and "air" controls.

You can watch examples encoded with Eclipsa Audio on our YouTube channel, and download sample recordings to try in your own DAW.

"I was looking for an ambisonic microphone for my film sound work and was very pleased to find the A-Type4 by Reynolds Microphones. The build quality is top notch."
